Why Boys School Uniforms Make Private School Better

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.nextlevelarticles.com/rss.php?rss=92
By : Mark Etinger

I remember the feeling in late August of buying for fall. It was a chance to reinvent myself, and to be newer and better, above all wiser, than I had been before. Mom would usher my brother and me into the car and drive to the mall where she'd buy me boys school pants, new shoes, shirts and a coat too. We'd come home with the trunk loaded with bags. It was like Christmas. All the new things made me feel new.

But inevitably there would be some trend among the cool kids that I hadn't planned for. That year everyone had a North Face Jester backpack, for example. My mom had bought us Jansport bookbags the year before. They are equally nice backpacks and so she wasn't going to invest that much more in a new North Face Jester just because that was the bag all the cool kids had. And I sure couldn't tell her explicitly that that was why I wanted it - that would make me look weak in her eyes, and it would spurn her love if I jettisoned the backpack she had so recently bought me. That would have been the worst.

I planned my attack. I dropped subtle hints when my friends came over. "Mom, look at Jack's backpack. Isn't it nice?" And she'd say, "Yeah, and so is yours." It wasn't working. It probably wouldn't work at all, I realized. I did already have a nice backpack. So I set my sights on other items that would make me more popular and elite in the eyes of my peers, a North Face vest, for example. After a couple of weeks of pushing, she relented and I had one. People even began taking up wearing them after I had bought mine.

It's bizarre that children find such simple and important ways to distinguish themselves. It's very similar to the way adults do, except as we age, our techniques become more subtle. That's why I was so pleased by the time I got to high school. At that point the public schools weren't doing very well, due to budget cuts of some kind or another, and so my parents decided to transfer me to a school that made me wear boys school uniforms. This was a blessing because I didn't have to worry about my clothes in order to make friends - I looked like everyone else! It allowed my true colors to show and I was one of the cool kids in no time.
