Getting The Most Out Of a Tens Unit

A TENS Unit is a clinically proven device to help with chronic pain management. It's non-invasive and completely drug-free. All you need to do is hook up the electrodes to the device, place them on the intended area, and voila, pain signals are essentially blocked so the brain is tricked into thinking there is no pain. But in order to get the best usage out of the device, you not only need to take care of it, you need to purchase quality accessories that go along with it.

Electrodes are not only necessary for treatment, they have a direct affect on the quality of the treatment. That is why you can't skimp out when purchasing them. There are actually two types you can purchase, silver electrodes and carbon electrodes. The difference is that the silver has an actual thin layer of silver between the pad and the backing where the wire connection is located. But these two electrodes were not created equal. Silver electrodes come highly recommended because there is a better connection between the electrode and lead wire. It will therefore distribute electricity more uniformly than carbon.

If silver is better than carbon, it should come as no surprise that they tend to be a bit more expensive since you are getting higher quality. But it is well worth the price difference because they are much more effective, meaning you will most definitely have more stimulation to the affected area. If that wasn't reason enough, they also use copper lead wires which prevent wire pull out and promote dispersion better.

Although not necessary, but also recommended, are foam backed electrodes. Using them will allow you to combine hot and cold therapies along with the TENS Unit stimulation. The foam will wick away moisture and ad insulation between the pad and the external therapy. Foam is also smooth and very flexible, meaning it's easier to place them on any area of the body. The other option is mesh or cloth backing which is slightly more flexible.

Along with the proper electrodes, quality gel is also needed. Choose brand names or any American made gel. The better the gel, the more uses you will get out of the electrodes and then less replacements you will have to buy in the long run. Tens Unit care kits will also extend the life of the device and accessories.

The more you invest in a TENS Unit, the longer the lifespan and the better you will feel after each treatment.
