When winter rears its ugly head, people always have to prepare for the worst. Last winter was brutal for the U.S. and there is no indication that this winter won't be just as bad. We all hope for fewer winter storms, but we can't control the powerful forces of Mother Nature. Before winter fully embraces us, start to take care of your preparations now. Better safe than sorry!
Winter storms can be very dangerous, just as bad as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. They have the ability to knock out heat, power, and communication services. If the storm is bad enough, you could be without power and heat for several days. The National Weather Service actually refers to winter storms as "deceptive killers" because most deaths and injuries are indirectly related. People crash their cars on slippery roads or die from hypothermia when without heat for too long.
Prepare an emergency kit that includes rock salt to melt ice on sidewalks and driveways, sand to improve a car's traction, plenty of snow shovels, heating fuel in case you lose heat, and plenty of extra clothing and blankets to keep you warm. Minimize your travel, but if you have to, keep an emergency kit in your car as well. If the weather gets bad while driving, pull over immediately. However, do not leave the car running. Only turn it on for ten minute intervals to keep warm. When the engine is on, slightly roll down the window for ventilation and always clear the exhaust pipe of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you lose power or heat, you must wait until after the storm is gone to proceed to a disaster relief center. Going out during will be far too dangerous. Before a storm hits, look up information online to find where the nearest disaster relief center is just in case. However, if you forget, you can actually text "shelter + your zip code" to 4FEMA to find the closest shelters in your region. Bring plenty of clothing, food, water, etc. because you never know how long you will actually be staying there. Try to bring what you can, but don't pack like it's a vacation. You can expect hundreds of other people there too and space will be tight.
As the old saying goes, "Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best." Keep yourself safe, always be prepared, and seek help from a disaster relief center should you need assistance or protection from the storm.
