A Reality Check With Free Documentaries Online

There are always the times when we enjoy cuddling up on the couch with a bag of freshly made popcorn, waiting to be simply entertained. It usually happens after a stressful week at work. We just want to unwind and not have to think above a 6th grade level. We want someone or something to distract us from real life. That's when we typically turn to mainstream Hollywood movies, often silly comedies or action movies with no real plot.

You can't really convince me that any Arnold Schwarzenegger movie is really looking to change the world. It's fun watching over-choreographed fight scenes and things explode into flames, but luckily the good guy is able to leap in front of it just in the nick of time. Of course not all movies Hollywood spits out is so predictable and mundane, but they can be comforting in times of need. You search for these free movies online to escape the horrors of everyday life.

But then there are times when you want a deeper meaning, you want something to impact your life. Or perhaps it's as simple as just wanting to learn something new. That's when we turn to free documentaries online. Not all documentaries have to be so gripping as a special about 9/11 or poverty levels in third world countries. They can be somewhat lighthearted like "March of the Penguins," although that does cause me to tear up a bit towards the end. Naturally there is middle ground, like "Super Size Me" which makes you think twice about that Big Mac, but it doesn't leave you with a floor full of tissues or guilt you into donating to as many charities as you can afford.

Some shy away and refuse to watch documentaries online. They fear what they might learn about themselves, the corporations they readily endorse, and the country they've loved their entire lives. But people need to step away from their personal bubble and they also need to continue their education. After college, you need to put in that extra effort. Instead of trying to read a textbook on the origins of the universe, why not look up free documentaries online about it? It's both engaging and incredibly informative. Not to mention, you'll feel smarter and better about yourself.

From the educational to the shock of reality to the humorous, documentaries can offer a break from the overtly fictitious nature of a Hollywood movie. Life just doesn't happen that way and sometimes we need a dose of reality, to bring us back to the here and now, the way real people live their lives.
