How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal is a type of medical treatment that incorporates the light and pulsation from lasers to remove hair from an area. It is most effective on dark, coarse hair, specifically when it is on individuals with light skin tone. It works by the beam from the laser passing through the skin and to the follicle. Heat given off from the laser then damages the follicle, inhibiting natural growth. This procedure cannot guarantee permanent removal but is capable of slowing down natural growth.

This treatment is used to remove unwanted hair. This may also be used as a treatment option for ingrown hairs or pilonidal cysts. Common areas for treatment: chin, upper lip, pubic region, abdomen, and armpits. The beams are designed to target melanin or pigmentation. This is why it is easy to target dark hair on light skin. Laser removal is not as effective on light colored locks such as gray, white, or blond. Individuals with dark skin are at higher risk of having the laser pinpoint the pigment in their skin. When this occurs, the result is skin discoloration.

There are risks and side effects to be aware of. First, keep in mind that there is no guarantee anything will be permanently removed. In fact, there is a high chance that it will not grow back, probably at a slower rate than normal, lighter in color, and finer in texture. Common side effects: crusting, scabbing, and change in skin pigmentation, and skin irritation. Less common effects are change in texture of skin, scarring, infection, blistering, and allergic reaction to chemicals used during the procedure.

It is important to do research on a doctor. He or she should be board certified. There are salons and spas in which workers are allowed to perform the treatment without proper certification. In the days before removal, avoid sun exposure, waxing and plucking of the area, and electrolysis. These behaviors may irritate the follicle.

Cost varies. There are many variables that effect total cost of the procedure. Some examples: size of the designated area, and time and number of sessions necessary. Consult with a doctor for specific prices.

Schedule a meeting with the doctor before the procedure. This is an important step because it allows you to be briefed on what you can expect before, during, and after the treatment. In general, before the treatment, patients are equipped with specialized goggles that protect the eyes. The doctor may then add a topical anesthetic to the removal area to reduce potential discomfort during the procedure.

Doctors will use a handheld laser. This instrument is pressed against the skin in the desired area. At this time the patient may feel a stinging sensation. Overall, the procedure can take a few minutes to an hour and in some cases, multiple sessions are required.

The area may be red or swollen for the first couple hours following the treatment. The stinging sensation may linger for a couple of days. During the few weeks after treatment, it is best to avoid sun exposure. Final results differ from person to person. Hair targeted during the treatment should begin to shed within three weeks.
