Window Coverings Adorn Bare Windows And Rooms

Window coverings are useful in keeping homes not only insulated from extremes of temperature but they also lend an aesthetic appeal to every room that has one. The main categories of coverings for the window consist of blinds, shades and curtains. Within these categories the consumer will find dozens of colors, textures, and styles of products designed to keep the home or work place temperature controlled and attractive.

Shades are the most efficient insulators preventing the interior from losing the desired interior temperatures. Different manufacturers have coined their products with customized names so that the consumer is advised to do some research before committing themselves to a purchase. The names may be a bit confusing for the uninitiated.

The Roman shade can be purchased cordless, and motorized. It comes with lift cords that are retractable that prevent children and pets from becoming entangled. One has only to lightly push or pull the bottom rail of the shade and it can easily be raised and lowered. This system is also applied to shades called the Honeycomb, the pleated and the modern Roman shade.

The Honeycomb shade was created forty years' ago in response to the energy crisis. Essentially these are honeycomb shaped panels that operate like tubes creating an insulation barrier of air. The newer models now have a double honeycomb design where 50% more of the temperature indoors stays indoors. In the winter when heat tends to want to escape through the cold windows, these shades will prevent that from happening.

Blinds are available in both the horizontal and vertical styles for both windows and doors. Blinds help to absorb sound but do not have the same insulating properties that shades have. Blinds come in real wood, faux wood, fabric covered panels and aluminum. The width of the slats will have a noticeable effect on how the room will look and feel.

Narrower slats will provide a more contemporary feel whereas the wider slats will feel more traditional. Many resemble the classic Venetian blinds that one sees in the movies. These blinds can create a retro look or they can bring the ambiance of the room right into the twenty-first century.

Both wooden and faux wood blinds are treated with paints or stains to bring out or duplicate the natural wood look. They're also coated with a fade proof UV product to prevent the harmful rays from fading the colors. When the windows are double glazed in the home or office there is already an insulation system in place. Blinds would work well in this kind of an arrangement.

Some people still prefer to have textiles in the form of curtains gracing their windows. For those who live in the higher parallels of latitude where the summer months are filled with daylight until midnight, blackout curtains would be important for them. Without a thick fabric blocking out the light they would be unable to get a good night's sleep.

Others will like to add curtains to a system that already has blinds or shades. They would like their little girl's room to have voile or frilly curtains for that touch of frivolous femininity. Window coverings include a vast array of possibilities so one should reserve some time to study which ones best suit their needs.
