Besides looking to change the world or make customers happy, businesses are ultimately trying to turn a profit. They want to spend as little as possible while getting the most in return. But sometimes you can't just look at the bottom line. You have to look past numbers and profits and think about what is best for your company. When you want to ship freight, you probably feel that the freight rates are the deciding factor. It's why you chose Company A over Company B -they put just a little extra cash back in your pocket. But who can honestly blame you? Even before the recession, companies always needed to look for ways to save. However, times have definitely changed and the economy has not recovered and it probably won't for quite some time. Receiving a freight quote is an important part of the decision when choosing a logistics company. Actually, if you can find several companies to offer quotes, you'll be in a good position to move along your decision making process. Just don't let it be the only factor. A company may offer you a cheaper rate, but how quickly will your materials and products arrive? Are they going to arrive a week past the day that you expect them? There is typically a reason why a company is offering you a far less price; it's because their standards are probably not as high. But that's certainly not to say all companies that offer cheap rates will provide "cheap" service. You have to look for the middle ground where you can find exceptional service with prices that won't make the Accounting staff weep. How fast the freight will ship and customer service are two very important factors, along with price. When freight arrives late or damaged, you need to know that the logistics company is willing to set the matter straight -whether that be offering you a discount the next time you ship or paying for any damages accrued. You need to know that any situation will be rectified. Likewise, you want a competent staff that can quickly place your orders and receive payments rather than keeping you on hold for half an hour. After all, you have other pressing matters to attend to at your own company. You can't afford to be playing phone tag with the people you do business with. Money should always be a concern, but don't allow that to become your only concern. Otherwise all those cheap prices will buy you is a major headache.
