How I Learned to Love Disposable Briefs

By : Mark Etinger

When I had my first experience with incontinence, I felt all the embarrassment I felt when I was a little boy bullied in school trying to take on Billy Johnson and failing and getting laughed at, as well as the sympathy I had for my daughter when I first changed her diaper after bringing her home from the hospital in a chamois cloth, her helplessness now my own, and the worst part was, I figured it would only get worse, that I would be doomed until the end of my life by wearing Depends adult diapers.

But then I began to understand that I shouldn't feel like a helpless baby because I've had hundreds of times more experience. And just because one part of my body doesn't work the way it used to, that doesn't mean I should be embarrassed or feel like the end of my life is approaching. Growing old ain't for sissies. And after all those years of working right, I can't hold it against my body if it begins to malfunction a little bit.

So I did some research to find out how other people deal with incontinence. There are exercises you can do called kegels, which help your urinary tract muscles. I started practicing them a few times a day, and maybe it was a placebo effect, but within a few weeks, I had only been incontinent sporadically. I paid close attention to my diet. I bought disposable briefs so that in case of an emergency, clean up is made easy.

A lot of dealing with incontinence is mental. There's such a stigma around it that when it finally happens to you it feels like you're all alone, and to share it with anyone is even worse than the action itself, it's comparable to admitting impotence, which once exposed, will only bring you down in the eyes of others. So I've tried to do just the opposite by embracing it, poking fun at it, when it comes up unnecessarily. And it makes everyone, my wife and kids, feel a lot more relaxed about it. Grampa still has a sense of humor, and he's alive enough to know that incontinence is just another stage of life. Sure it's not as comfortable as middle age, I'm not disputing that, but it's what it is, and if I can't change it, I might as well do my best to enjoy it. As odd as that sounds.
