Practical Self Defense And Other Safety Measures For Women

It's unfortunate to think that we live in a world of violence. Crime happens every single day in this country, thousands of robberies and rapes occur each year. Although we can't prevent these crimes from happening, we can certainly take steps to prepare and defend ourselves if such an incident were to occur.

One of the most important things to remember is to use common sense. Don't walk around neighborhoods by yourself late at night. Even in neighborhoods that are deemed "safe," crime can still occur. There is always safety in numbers so don't be afraid to ask for someone to escort you home. Instead of walking home, take a cab -but check the identification of the driver first. If you're taking public transportation during non-peak hours, sit in train or subway compartments with the most people. Taking your own car? Don't park far away from the store, check the car before entering, and have your keys ready in hand before you walk out of the store.

When in the home, always lock your doors, remember to shut any windows before bed. There is nothing wrong with adding another deadbolt lock to the front door. If you're not expecting someone, always ask who is at the door. These are simple tasks that should eventually become routine. Just remember to always be aware of your surroundings. Do not distract yourself on your cellphone or iPod. Be alert.

Besides being on guard, every woman should take self defense lessons because one day an incident might occur. Learning self defense techniques may stop a rape from occurring and it will give any woman a much needed boost in self confidence and empowerment. However, one should take a self defense class and not martial arts. Self defense tactics are meant to be used in real life situations. They are moves that are easy to perform, regardless of size or skill, that can impair an attacker. Martial arts on the other hand, are more for competition fighting. Trying to perform a round house kick is just not realistic if someone is trying to attack you.

After taking several self defense lessons, you can feel free to learn martial arts as well so you can at least be in great shape and feel even more confident knowing that you can fully defend yourself. When you feel confident, it shows and the chances of being attacked will decrease. Predators prey on the weak for a reason, they want an easy target.

Having awareness and self defense techniques memorized doesn't mean you're impervious, but it will greatly increase your odds of warding off danger.
