When it comes to winter travel, you want to go somewhere warm. Mediterranean perhaps. Let's look at the countries worth visiting when the colder months come for the rest of the world.

Spain, especially northeastern Spain, is a hot spot. From Barcelona to Girona, there is a wealth of things to do and see. Restaurant magazine named El Celler de Can Roca in Girona the second best restaurant in the world. Pals is a medieval town with winding roads and castles. Farther up the road, Figueres has a Dali museum. The Costa Brava (the name of this entire region) has picturesque beaches, a moderate climate and tons of culture.

Italy has plenty of culture too, from Rome to Venice to Florence, there is something for everyone. The rolling hills of Umbria and Tuscany are speckled with medieval towns. The art in Florence and Rome is the world's most famous. And farther south, in Naples and Sardinia, the maritime culture is profoundly different. Between the espresso and the wine, the epicurean will be entirely satisfied.

A car makes it easier to get around, but you may find it difficult to take enough time off to see it all. The Dalmatian coast , as well as Albania and Montenegro offer their own unique cultures as well as miles of scenic coastal towns on the way to Greece, perhaps one of the most historical places in the world. From Athens to Thessalonika to any of the 2000 islands scattered in the Aegean, a trip to Greece is a trip of a lifetime. Athens has two subway systems, an old and a new, which allow for a merging between the Athens built for the Olympics in 2000 and the Athens of the Old World, with street peddlers, gypsy boys and traditional dress and song.

Turkey is home to the former capital of the Roman Empire. Present day Istanbul is a crossroads, where Asia meets Europe and cultures yield and merge accordingly. The Hagia Sophia is one of the more popular destinations for tourists, but just walking through the city and seeing what's for sale should allow you to absorb the culture.

No matter where you go, the Mediterranean offers beautiful weather, kind people, and varied culture. All you have to do is plan ahead for your Europe airline tickets. Business class travel makes the long trip a little easier but if you want to save for when you get there, then you can figure out the details.
