Over 40? You May Want To Consider Multifocal Contact Lenses

Today, many people over the age of 40 are enjoying healthier lifestyles. Whether it is going to the gym, jogging, swimming, or another strenuous activity, more people over the 40 are realizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Although a healthy lifestyle is very beneficial, sometimes when we reach our 40s, an eye condition called presbyopia can develop. This eye condition makes it difficult to focus on near objects. Reading glasses are an option, however, more people over the age of 40 are choosing contact lenses to correct their vision problems. Today, multifocal contact lenses are an option for people who have been diagnosed with presbyopia.

There are multifocal contact lenses that have a bifocal design with two distinct lens powers. One lens power corrects long-distance vision and one power corrects for near vision. There are also other multi focal design eyeglasses such as progressive eyeglass lenses that provide a gradual change in lens power for a visual transition that is natural from distance to close up. You can get multifocal contacts as rigid gas permeable (RGP) and as soft contact lenses. As well, they are designed for daily wear or extended wear. One-day disposable soft multifocal lenses are very convenient as they allow the wearer to discard the lenses at the end of the day so they do not have to be maintained with various solutions. Gas permeable contact lenses offer distinct sharp vision.

Another new choice is the hybrid multifocal contacts. These lenses have a gas permeable center and a soft periphery. Another contact lens design for presbyopia is the concentric bifocal pattern. In the concentric bifocal lens, the near correction power is in a small circle at the center of the lens which is surrounded by a larger circle that provides the distance correction.

Because alternating multifocal lenses will have two lens powers, these lenses work out well when driving and when reading. Generally, multifocal contact lenses provide 80% clearer vision for approximately 80% of the wearer's daily activities. It is always handy to have a pair of multifocal eyeglasses on hand in case you are engaged in activity where the multifocal lenses are not performing up to par such as reading really fine print.

If multifocal lenses do not give you sufficient vision or they are not comfortable, consider monovision contact lenses. Your optician will be able to assess the best contacts lenses for you. Today, by using a Toric lens design, soft multifocal contacts can correct astigmatism. Hybrid multifocal contact lenses also correct most types of astigmatism. Thanks to innovations in eyesight improvement technology, there are now many options available.

If you are over 40 and develop presbyopia, you can still wear contacts as you have the option of wearing Multifocal Contact Lenses. As well, you can find contact lenses online at greatly discounted prices. When you shop online for contact lenses, you can save a lot of money, often up to 70%. Talk to your eye doctor about the best contact lens choice for you.
