Orthodontic Care Contributes To A Fabulous Smile

Patients who seek orthodontic care will be investing in both their health and their self-confidence. Orthodontists complete rigorous training programs, to become specialists in tooth and jaw structure. With guidance from an orthodontist, patients may use corrective devices, to fix any dental or facial irregularities. Although doctors recommend seeing an orthodontist during childhood, even adults will benefit from corrective dentistry.

Fewer than ten percent of dentists are qualified orthodontists. Dentists complete a medical school program, and then go to dental school, where they learn to care for teeth, gums, and other general elements of oral health. Orthodontists, on top of dental training, complete a two to three-year residency program in orthodontic studies.

Orthodontists study the structure of teeth, as opposed to the health of teeth. Orthodontists have specialized understanding of tooth movement, and of techniques to balance facial irregularities. Orthodontists specialize in misalignment of the teeth and jaw, and in associated corrective procedures. Commonly, orthodontists provide treatment using corrective devices, and occasionally perform surgery, where needed.

Braces are a common corrective appliance. Braces may be constructed of either metal or porcelain, or of clear liners which do not use brackets or wires. When braces are installed, patients may feel some discomfort at first, which is usually relieved with over-the-counter painkillers. When patients have braces, they must avoid certain foods, and must be careful to follow all instructions.

Headgear realigns the jaws and teeth, correcting overbites. Headgear applies pressure to the teeth and jaws, to control the growth of the lower jaw. To be effective, orthodontists recommend wearing headgear between ten and fifteen hours per day. Patients will usually see correction of the overbite, within six to fifteen months. However, each patient must follow the directions of his or her orthodontist, because each case is unique.

After wearing braces or headgear, patients often wear retainers. The retainer holds teeth in position, allowing the surrounding bone structure to stabilize. During the first year of retainer wear, the periodontal ligaments are trained to "remember" their new alignment. After that first year, many people still wear retainers at night, to guarantee a lasting, beautiful smile.

Most children have their first orthodontic exam between the ages of nine and twelve. At that time, the orthodontist evaluates the bite, tooth placement, and facial growth patterns, using digital x-rays and photographs. However, no one it too old to benefit from orthodontic care. In fact, adults who visit orthodontists may experience an improved self-image, and improved quality of life.

Some orthodontists offer free consultations. During a consultation, treatment options are discussed, along with insurance and financing options. During treatment, patients will see their orthodontist every six to eight weeks. In between visits, patients must maintain good oral hygiene, and wear rubber bands, headgear, and retainers, as directed.

Some patients may fear that orthodontic procedures will cause extreme discomfort or pain. However, with the many advances in dentistry over the last few years, most patients experience little or no pain. For a great smile that will last a lifetime, patients of all ages should consider obtaining orthodontic care.
