Why Claddagh And Promise Rings Came To Represent Commitment

Rings have a long history of promise-keeping. They were used often between two people to signify a deal that was made and worn until the pact was completed. That's why it was common to see rings used by members of royal families, knighthood, and religious figures. Call it superstition, myth, or whatever you like, breaking the promise was considered a great offense. As time progressed that meaning was modernized but never lost. We use wedding rings, promise rings, and Claddagh rings to bind our commitments.

Promise rings are often interpreted as the precursor to an engagement ring but it does not have to be limited by this definition. They can just as easily be used by friends and family to signify they will always be there for you. The ring is meant to be worn for the duration of the promise, or until it develops into something more and is replaced by a new ring.

Essentially the etiquette is to be straight-forward with the terms of the promise. Sometimes it is suggested to write a note or vow to correlate with the gift giving. They are gender neutral jewelry and come in a variety of styles. The bands are a preferred choice for men, but there are also engagement ring styled options. Women may enjoy heart-shaped promise rings for friendships. You can find them in silver and gold tones, quite commonly rose or white gold.

Claddagh rings have a similar meaning but they are closer to the idea of the wedding or engagement ring. They are made for people in (or out) love. The term "Claddagh" is derived from the town of the same name. Its definition, oddly enough actually means "stony beach" because of the origin within County Galway by the water. The hands denote lasting friendship, the heart signifies love, and the crown means loyalty.

They are sometimes used in place of wedding rings, birth stone rings, and faith rings. There are some modern variations of the ring but traditional styles are popular. They, too, are gender neutral rings but the men's ring is often heavier and slightly bulkier. The way in which you wear this accessory is based solely on your current relationship status. These gifts are meant to be given only to those most dear to your heart.

Take your time when you purchase these gifts. You might want to bring your loved one along with you since you are both going to be wearing the jewelry. Try on the variations and pick the best fit for both of you.
