How to Clean A Silk Area Rug

By : Mark Etinger

I was out at the bar last week and my friend Mike was introducing me to his pal, Tim. He asked me about where I went to high school and whether I knew Tyler Jackson. "Do I ever, I said! He's the kid who threw up on my dad's area rug!"

This got him laughing, because they're good friends, and Tyler and I were pretty good friends too, back in the day. "Yeah," I went on, "I had this huge house party when I was sixteen. Kids from all over town came and it quickly got out of hand. They broke into my parent's liquor cabinet, which stressed me out, but since there were so many pretty girls, and they all wanted to talk to me, since it was my house, I let it go. But by midnight there were more than a hundred people there, and things were getting crazy. Rumors that the cops were on their way circled and I ran through the house shepherding people out. Upstairs at the entrance to my parent's bedroom, stupidly left out, was my father's prized area rug. We bought it in Mexico for five thousand dollars. It was pure silk, with rich blues and reds, and it was five feet by eight. My old man loved that rug. And lying right on top of it was Tyler. 'Hey man' I said, 'that's like the most expensive thing in this house. You look pretty sick, dude, why don't you move into the bathroom. He groaned in what I thought was acceptance. I continued making the rounds.

Ten minutes later, another of my good friends found me and told me that that kid who was upstairs on the rug had yakked on it. It was true. His other friends were helping him, looking around helplessly, suppressing laughter. I screamed. Now people were leaving because they knew that I had found out that someone had yakked on my dad's silk area rug and I was on a rampage - forget the cops. They left within half an hour and I wondered what to do. I tried cleaning it but there was still a hideous spot.

When my parents came home they knew instantly that something had gone horribly wrong. And when my dad saw the rug, well…I told Tyler, and he was kind enough to pay for the damage. I took the area rug to professional area carpets cleaning and afterwards it looked brand new."

Tim thought this was hilarious. I told him to tell Tyler hello for me.
