IVF Cons

IVF is the name given to in vitro fertilization, a process through which many women have been able to conceive despite fertility or reproductive disorders. The IVF process has many benefits, but you will find that the IVF cons may be a deal breaker for you. In order to ensure that you make the right decision when looking into medically assisted methods of conception, you need to understand the cons of IVF as well as the benefits.

If you are a person who doesn't like needles, you will find that IVF is not the solution for you. In order to harvest the eggs for the IVF process, a hollow needle is inserted into your ovaries via your vaginal walls, and the eggs are extracted using the needle. You will be injected at least once a day, and the last few days of the process will use at least 3 needles per day.

Ultrasounds are used frequently in the IVF process, and many women find that they greatly dislike ultrasounds. An ultrasound is used daily towards the end of the IVF process, as it helps doctors to monitor the growth of the embryo.

There are a number of drugs that are administered to the woman in order to help her conceive, and these drugs can have negative side effects on the body. Lupron, for example, causes the body to cease producing estrogen. After being given that drug, you are given a drug to increase estrogen production and cause your body to produce more eggs than is normal. The side effects include health problems, insomnia, irritability, nausea, vomiting, lack of breath, and headaches.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can be caused by the body producing too many eggs in your ovaries. This can be very painful, as your abdomen and ovaries swell up.

There is a small risk that you can actually damage the inside of your body when the needle is inserted to harvest the eggs. The needle may nick or scratch a blood vessel, your bladder, or your intestines. While the risk of this happening is small, there is always a risk when trying medical procedures.

There is a great risk that you will miscarry your baby when trying IVF, as with all pregnancies. Miscarrying can be incredibly painful and very draining, and can do serious damage to your health. If the embryo doesn't attach itself to the uterine wall, it will cause you to miscarry the embryo.

The cost of these IVF treatments alone can be exorbitant. In the UK, people can spend as much as 12,000 pounds per cycle. In the U.S., the IVF treatments could cost as much as $12,000 to $15,000 per cycle, a high cost to pay to get pregnant.

Seeing as a number of eggs are gathered and fertilized, there will always be extra embryos from the IVF procedure. Many women find that killing the embryos conflicts with their morals, and freezing them seems little better. There is a moral dilemma that you may have to face if you consider IVF, as the embryos are considered to be living the moment they are fertilized.
