On days when the weather is bad, children can become rather bored and unsettled. In fact, you may even discover that you get a little bored yourself. When the weather conditions keeps you indoors it's great to think of a few crafts for some fun family time. Even when you haven't got a lot of art materials in the house, many times you can find everything you need in your kitchen cabinet. If you have a bag of un-popped popcorn, then you have enough supplies to amuse both you and your child for the entire afternoon. The following are some great tips for some straightforward crafts you can make with popcorn.
Fabric Bags
Though they aren't called "corn bags", you are still able to use popcorn as a replacement for beans in these entertaining little baggies. As a matter of fact, because the kernels are smaller than beans, they can in fact be easier to use. Get a few fabric scraps and stitch them into little bags. If you are particularly creative, you could even make them into special shapes, for example cars or critters. But if you choose to keep it simple you can just make plain squares, but be sure to leave roughly 2 inches open on just one of the sides. Before you sew together the bags, make sure the proper sides of the fabric are facing each other, this way you are able to turn them right side out before you put the popcorn in them. When you have the bags stitched, fill a large bowl with popcorn kernels. Your kids can then fill the bags with the kernels. This task is easier if you use a funnel. Fill the bag around two thirds full then stitch the opening shut. You can then organize a few fun games that can be enjoyed indoors, such as a competition to see who is able to toss the most bags in a box or bucket. Or, play a tossing game like "Hot Potato" with the bags. Don't forget to get some pictures of these fun memories which are being made, so that you will be able to place them in some picture frames.
Mosaic Artwork
If you have numerous colors of popcorn, then you can create mosaic artwork. Give your youngster a square of light cardboard, for instance a section of poster board. Then they can draw simple designs on the cardboard as a guide for applying the popcorn. Coat each part of the drawing with white glue. Then while the glue is still fresh, apply the popcorn kernels to the board. Continue gluing different shades of popcorn until the design is all filled. After they dry, you could even put a few of these mosaics in picture frames, displaying them on the wall. Or, use the mosaics as interesting trivets.
Popcorn Jewelry And Decorations
Stringing popcorn is often very fun, even when it is not the holiday time of year. Pop a big bowl's worth of popcorn. Next, give each of your little ones some strong thread or some light string, threaded on a yarn needle. Then they will be able to start stringing the popcorn onto their strings, and they can even create variety by using rings of dry cereal too if they would like to. You can then hang the pretty garlands around your house as decorations. If you would prefer to make necklaces out of the corn you can just make the strands shorter and then tie the ends together. Snap some shots of your sweet youngsters all wearing their lovely popcorn jewelry, and then place them in some fun picture frames.
So if you're running out of fun ideas on a rainy day, then don't worry. Your kids will love expressing themselves with these fun and creative popcorn crafts.
