The end of summer does not signify the end of the need for disposable cutlery and other party ware. Rather, these are items that you should keep on hand in your house throughout the year, especially during stormy seasons when you tend to lose power. After all, the most important step in preparing for a big storm is to be prepared.
If you realize that you will probably lose power during a storm, the key to being comfortable is to plan ahead. You need to stock up on blackout essentials such as batteries, matches, flashlights, candles, nonperishable food, and disposable dinnerware. Make sure you buy and set aside a couple packages of batteries that are only designed for use during an electrical outage; keep a few spare sets of matches out of reach of children. Before a big storm, take stock of the number of candles you have and test that the flashlights work.
Essential food supplies require no refrigeration or cooking. These items may include canned food, packaged juices, peanut butter, crackers, cereal, honey, fruit, dried fruit, protein bars, and powdered milk. Each family member should be allotted at least one gallon of clean water per person per day. The disposable dinnerware will enable you to eat the food comfortably.
When you lose electricity, disposable dinnerware makes life much easier. The plastic silverware, plates, bowls, cups, etc. enable you to eat even if your dishwasher is not working and you are without hot water. An electric stove is obviously of no use during an electrical outage, so you have little choice but to eat cold meals. If you have a gas stove and can make hot food, you will still need to clean whatever utensils you use to prepare and eat the meal. Generally, when you lose power you only have access to whatever hot water remains in the water tank; thoroughly cleaning standard dinnerware wastes what little hot water you have. Since preparing food, even if it is just peanut butter sandwiches, is a difficult enough task to do by candlelight when the sky outside is gray, using the regular dinnerware that requires cleaning would be truly aggravating.
Disposable dinnerware is appropriate for any season and any occasion, whether it be an outdoor BBQ or an impromptu indoor camping session. When used in conjunction with other storm supplies, they may help make losing electricity seem like a grand camping adventure rather than an aggravating detour from normal daily life.
