By : Elijah James

IVF is a procedure that entails a man's sperm being combined with a woman's eggs in hopes of fertilizing and creating embryos. This method is common but there are not many couples who decide this method simply when they see the price tag that comes with it. This is a great procedure if a woman's tubes are blocked or if a man has an inadequate amount of sperm. Couples have some hope that this ART procedure can bring them a child.

This process of in vitro fertilization involves a fertility specialist combining an egg with sperm from her partner together in a lab dish for about 40 hours in hopes that the sperm will fertilize the eggs. If eggs are fertilized, the eggs are going to be surgically implanted back into the uterus. You are going to be advised to take it easy and to not lift or move around a lot. This helps to allow the eggs time to attach themselves into the uterine lining.

There are some cases where 5-20 eggs are retrieved and then only a few are fertilized. You will be given the chance to decide on the number of eggs you are getting transferred. While it is better to have a few implanted, this can also come with the downfall of having multiples.

What IVF Helps With

In regards to infertility in a couple, IVF can help with a number of complications. If you are partner are diagnosed with any of the following, you may find IVF to be beneficial:

• Ovulation difficulty

• Endometriosis

• Problems with the sperm or eggs

• Unexplained issues

• Inadequate sperm count

• Uterus or fallopian tube difficulties

• Sperm can't reach the eggs

What to Expect with IVF

This procedure is one that is going to take a toll on you and your partner financially and even emotionally. Women need to take injections each morning which will help with their lining if the uterus to allow embryos to become attached to it. This process is going to be long and you should prepare for the worst but expect the best in regards to how many cycles are needed. Timing is everything with IVF and you should make sure you are prepared for every aspect of it. Your doctor will give you instructions for what to do the night before as well as what you can expect the day of. Women will be given 2 options. One is to take something to be lightly sedated or you can choose to go under all the way.

After the eggs are fertilized in a lab dish with sperm for 40 hours or so, the eggs are then going to be implanted back into the woman. The entire egg retrieval is going to last about 30 minutes and you will be told not to do anything strenuous for a few days after the procedure. The hospital or clinic wil likely keep you for a few hours to ensure you are OK to go home. This procedure is repeated if the first cycle is unsuccessful and you and your doctor will talk about other options to try.
