Having a child is something that many couples want but when infertility strikes a couple, it can be rather hard to do just that. There are several options available but nowadays, even spending money on gas and food is enough to break people. It's hard and stressful when you and your partner are faced with this dilemma and here are some solutions to try out before giving up completely. IVF The first thing that comes to mind is in vitro fertilization. This process is long and can be emotionally and financially draining to many couples. There are many couples who can afford only one cycle and therefore if it comes back as failing, it can destroy them as well as their hope. However, if you are able to afford it, you should prepare to have at least 2-3 cycles before anything is successful. Your body needs time to adjust. This is a great method for both partners even when infertility is present in one or both partners. If the male is infertile, there is donor sperm that can be used as well. This method entails fertilizing eggs outside the body and then implanting them. Testicular Extraction of Sperm This method is used if a man lacks an adequate amount of sperm. This procedure entails removing sperm from the man's testes and this is done by doing a minor surgery or by even utilizing a needle to remove semen while placing a man under anesthesia. If sperm is retrieved it will be used to try and fertilize the woman's eggs in the ICSI procedure. The success rates are somewhat similar to that of IVF and while not very high, there are steps that your doctor can recommend to increase your success. Risks with Assisted Reproductive Technologies When it comes to these procedures, there are often times no severe complications or other dilemmas. Men will experience little to no risks and this however can depend on the type of procedure done. For example, if a procedure is done to retrieve a man's sperm, there may be a slight chance of minimal bleeding as well as some damage to the area were the semen was retrieved from and a chance of infection n the area. For women, the risks of these procedures include damaged blood vessels, reproductive organs and even organs that are surrounding the area. As far as children that are born through one of these methods, there are chances of having a lower birth weight as well as higher chromosomal rates. However, any couple thinking of these alternatives to having a child should not worry that much as these conditions and risks are minimal and rare right now. The unfortunate case is that some of these ART methods are not going to work and that leads many couples being faced with two options. They can either live with the reality of not having a child or they can decide to adopt a child. This is a difficult decision that some unfortunate couples are faced with, and this should be thought about carefully to ensure you are making the right decision.
