How Egg Donation Has Changed

There have been a number of advancements in egg donation over the years and many couples are now able to have a child even with donated eggs. This has allowed several couples to overcome infertility by way of other women offering their healthy eggs for use by infertile couples. This is known as egg donation but this has not always been such a big hit as it is nowadays. There has been a long history of tumultuous history that is loaded with both ethical as well as physical obstacles. There is an average of 3,000 babies that are born by way of donated eggs each year.

Development

Egg donation once was a method for infertile couples that had hardship getting pregnant due to a man's poor sperm quality. Nowadays, egg donation is used if a woman has low egg quality or has a genetic issue that could travel to her eggs. The initial research started back in 1980 and this happened right after IVF was founded as well as egg retrieval and also the founding of fertilizing eggs with a man's sperm outside of the body. The initial IVF procedure was first succeeded in the UK in 1978. The beginning of a successful egg donation took place in 1983in Australia.

Its Popularity

As time passed, egg donation became something very popular and this has been shown because there are many women who are deciding to have children later in life such as after their 30's. Many women choose to live life and complete school while having a career before deciding to have a child. There are many women that discover having a child gets harder the older they get. However, there was an essay that was published by the University of Michigan that stated individuals who went through IVF and then received donor eggs had a success rate of 51%. In addition it reported that there were 15,175 eggs that results in 7,588 live births.

Regulations

There are individual states that many have regulations in regards to egg donation. There are parental custody laws that were set into motion shortly after the case of Buzzanca vs. Buzzanca in the year 1955. This case went on to prove there was a lack of some of the Federal regulations. This particular case observed a couple that used donor eggs and sperm donation to have a child and there was also a surrogate mother who helps carry the baby and once divorced, all 5 individuals that were involved in this process began a custody battle over the child. A few of the states that have these types of regulations about fighting for a child born by egg or sperm donation include:

• Utah

• North Dakota

• New York

• Oklahoma

• California

• Texas

• Louisiana

New York has gone further than other states and has even developed a task Force on Life which was originally designed in the year 1985 which additionally involved other rules that pertained to rights of donors.

Egg donation has come a long way and there are several rules and regulations that egg donors agree to when donating their eggs.
