Back pain is a very common problem. There are different reasons for it and different ways to treat it. Back pain can range from mild to severe. Depending on how bad yours is, it may be time to call a doctor. If the pain runs down the back of your leg, it may be sciatica. If you feel sharp pain when coughing or bending at the waist, you may have a herniated disk. If you have a mild pain when lying in bed or getting out and you're over fifty, you may have osteoarthritis. These are some of the more extreme cases of chronic back pain; in more acute (sudden) forms of back pain there are different treatments.
Much back pain comes from lifting wrongly. Whenever lifting a heavy box, piece of furniture or other heavy weight you're not used to handling, squat down so that by extending your legs you lift the object. This is what is meant by lifting with your legs. Keep your gut tight so you don't get a hernia.
Poor posture can also enhance back pain. Stand and sit with your shoulders back, head forward and stomach flexed. Breathe through your nose. It may seem awkward at first, but it's the healthiest way to carry your body. Eventually, after you remind yourself enough, it will become part of your muscle memory and you will see the differences, not just in terms of lesser back pain, but in general health.
Acupuncture is an alternative method of treatment that over the past generation has garnered much attention. Needles clear energy pathways. Some people swear by this method, and others don't feel any difference. It is a mystery as to why some people are more responsive to acupuncture than others, but probably has to do with the mind-body connection. A chiropractor can offer lessons on how to stretch and strengthen your back. Deep tissue massages are another good way to ease pain; especially when combined with other treatments, massages are very effective. Yoga or tai chi is another way to improve back strength and lessen pain. All of these procedures take at least four or five visits to see results.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) units are small low-voltage electrical currents placed on the back. These TENS units stimulate nerves to help mask pain. A TENS electrode is most effective for acute pain.
Muscular pain can be relieved with Tiger Balm, which soothes and cools the muscles. Electrotherapy is a good option because you can do it yourself.
