Assisted Reproductive Technology is also known as ART, and is a method used to help infertile couples who are trying to have a child. There are several different procedures that fall into this category and these methods help couples conceive a child with a little help from medical technology. There are many causes for infertility and one of the more common causes is a woman having blocked fallopian tubes. Another common cause is a man having a lower than normal sperm count. There is an average of 30,000 babies who are born each year by way of these ART methods. About 1% of these babies come out to be live babies. Embryo Cryopreservation This method entails couples having their extra eggs being frozen for future cycles. This is great since you are going to pay for each cycle but the cost is not as expensive and egg retrieval is not needed. Once you decide to use these embryos for another round, these embryos are going to be thawed and then implanted inside the woman's uterus. However, if a couple has a successful round and decides they want more children, this is also a great way to have more children. ZIFT This ART method is both IVF and GIFT combined. This entails the eggs being fertilized with sperm just as in IVF except when they are fertilized they are going to be implanted into the woman's fallopian tubes instead. This method typically has higher success rates out of all the methods. There is an average of 29% live birth success with this method. GIFT This is an additional alternative to IVF and is short for Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer. IVF is done in the beginning and when it comes time to mixing the sperm with the eggs they get implanted into a woman's fallopian tubes in hopes of conceiving on their own. This procedure as well as IVF have about the same success rates and is about 24% per couple and per cycle. IVF This is the more common method but can be rather pricey. This comes with a 25-35% success rate for each cycle. This is one of the oldest forms of assisted reproductive technology and is increasingly growing. This method has allowed thousands of couples to have children and helps treat infertility for a couple. There are fertility drugs that a woman will take for a few weeks to help her body prepare for the eggs. There are also drugs that are taken to help produce more eggs which will be retrieved. Fertilized eggs are implanted back into the uterus in hopes of turning into a successful pregnancy. These are a few methods and over the years they are becoming more and more advanced. There are now gender selection technologies that allow you to learn what you are having from the point of an egg. More couples are choosing these IVF methods in hopes to one day build a family of their own as natural as possible.
