Collectible coins have had so many different styles, faces, and materials over the years that sometimes it is hard to keep up. One type of collectible coin that has become very popular lately is colorized coins. These are coins that have colorful designs added to them where originally there was no color. Many are quite beautiful. The first and most important thing to note is that the U.S. Mint never issues or sells colorized coins. These coins are created by other companies, using the likeness of the original coin but adding their own color. This is also true for any coins that have a hologram on them. These businesses that create colorized coins do not need permission from the U.S. Mint to colorize a coin unless the government owns copyright for the design of the specific coin in question. So if a place every tries to sell a colorized coin and claim that is it from the U.S Mint, it is not true! The original coin may be, but not the colorized version. There are two different classes of colorized coins. The first are spurious colorizations. They are coins in which colorization is added to an already existing coin. One good example is the presidential coins that have recently been turned into colorized Obama coins. While they serve as great pieces for those who have an attachment to a specific historical figure or place, they often aren't worth much in the long run. If you are looking for colorized coins that would be more of an investment, you'll want to look at the second class of colorized coins. While the U.S. Mint does not make coins like this, others do. The Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Australian Mint have produced colored coins that are considered valuable collectibles. The Royal Canadian Mint in particular has used the process of colorization to attract children to coin collecting. They have a collection of colored 25 cent coins with various mythological animals, like the Sasquatch or Mishephisu of Lake Superior. So when you look into colorized coins for your collection, consider if you are looking for something with value that may become a good future investment, or if you just want coins for their aesthetic look and design. Either way, you can't go wrong with adding them to your coin collection; they certainly do stand out in a really great way. Coin collecting just got a lot more colorful.
