Locks of Love and Their Work For Cancer Wigs

Locks of Love is one of those organizations that everyone has heard of, even if they aren't totally sure of what they do. They've been around for so many years and have done so much good for young kids who suffer from hair loss, whether because of cancer or other reasons. Everyone has heard of someone who was affected by or donated to Locks of Love. They do all they can to provide quality wigs for young children who need them and they have a great history behind them.

In December of 1997, Locks of Love was founded by a retired cardiac nurse named Madonna Coffman. She had suffered from alopecia when she was in her twenties, which is the medical condition that results in hair loss. Often, alopecia strikes for no known reason and without warning. Later in life when she had her own daughter, her little one developed alopecia herself at the very young age of 4. It was then that Coffman decided to pursue Locks of Love full time, to help her daughter and others like her who needed human hair wigs so they could lead normal lives.

Locks of Love has now attained national reach, which is why so many people have heard of the charity. With backing from big names like Oprah and Jay Leno, to being on shows like Nightline and 60 Minutes, Locks of Love has had great exposure and been a great help in getting human hair wigs to kids who need them. Right now they provide wigs to kids in all 50 states as well as Canada and are looking to reach even farther, hopefully helping out children all over the world.

To donate to Locks of Love, you have to follow a few requirements so that your hair can become a cancer wig. Your hair must be 10 inches or longer to donate. Curls pulled straight do count! So if you plan on donating, you may want to take some time to grow your hair out first! When you donate, your hair must be in a ponytail or braid for easy shipping and use.

If your hair is colored or permed you can donate, but not if your hair was bleached before coloring. Bleach can cause a chemical reaction when processing the human hair wigs that can ruin the hair and make it unusable.

Donating your hair for children to use is one of the most selfless things you can do! And think of the smile that child will have on their face knowing they will have a real hair wig that will let them carry on with their lives normally.
