I got home yesterday and saw my little brother walking out in front our apartment. We went over trivialities and he told me that "today" (yesterday) he went to the dentist to get his teeth cleaned. The first time he went, the dentist was sick so he had to reschedule for yesterday, which raised his suspicions slightly, because when do you ever hear about a sick dentist. He told me what happened, how she used the brush to remove the plaque, asking if that was good enough, as though somehow he might have been jilted in his dentist experience. I asked him the cost. I was surprised. "With x-rays?" I asked. Cheap.
Inside my mom was cooking dinner. She asked me if when I went to my dentist he flossed my teeth. I said, "of course." She looked to the heavens and sighed. I said, "but I pay extra for it, relax." "I just want the best for him," she said. I can imagine. "What would happen if he needed a NY orthodontist for some reason. I mean, he's already had braces, but that was almost ten years ago."
When I went to my dentist he cleaned my teeth with authoritative confidence. It was the head dentist, after all, and it was a Saturday, which was also odd, but hey, it was easier than waiting another few weeks; I was obsessed with the fact that the more time I spent away from the dentist - it had been nearly nine months since my last teeth cleaning - the greater my chances would be of having a cavity, and that I dreaded. I could just picture it, him showing me the slides, and taking, pointing, that's a cavity. Then me having to reschedule, and making the trip on another Saturday morning, whereby the night before I have to tell my friends, sorry guys I can't go out tonight, I have a dentist's appointment tomorrow and them saying, but dude, it's Friday…
But luckily I just had a few "spots" which if treated properly, wouldn't become cavities and wouldn't need filling. Which worried me, and continues to do so, I must say, but the dentist reassured me saying, "just brush after you drink orange juice and eat candy and sweets and you'll be fine." So far so good. But speaking of, when I make my next dentist appointment in a couple of months, I'll probably go through the same fear. Hopefully those "spots" haven't evolved into anything else.
