Urban warfare, it means many things to many people, but to me it is about the battle between man and the sophisticated urban pests that have come to plague him. I have lived in New York City my entire life and I have tangoed with the wildest urban pests: fleas, bed bugs, mice, rats, and roaches. If there is one thing I understand it is how to deal with pests. The key to doing battle in the urban jungle is to be prepared. Make sure you have mouse glue traps, disposable fly traps, bug bite ointment, and an excuse at the ready for the inevitable question of "How did you get bed bugs again?" I usually blame one of my roommates. The war on mice and pests is a lot like the war on drugs. It is unwinnable (albeit less costly) but with constant fighting you can control the problem. Invest in the best mouse traps. Every few weeks you will need to put down fresh mouse traps, and every week you will thin the ranks of the mice just a bit. It is a chore but it is an inevitable part of city living, like people yelling under your windows at night. The same could be said for flies. Without disposable fly traps most New York City apartments would be overrun by flies. The disposable fly traps are an effective method of keeping an apartment relatively free of flies. And, if you think people yelling under your windows at all hours of night in annoying, try falling asleep with a fat, excited fly buzzing in the room. If you are moving to New York City you should note that unless you can afford to live in a palatial urban estate in the Upper East Side or Park Slope, there is a good chance you too will suffer the scourge of urban pestilence. It may not be as bad as biblical pestilence, but it sure is annoying. It is even worse if you live in a first floor apartment or a walk up. Unlike humans, mice don't seem to mind walking up the stairs. You should also get the walls of your apartment properly sealed off. It should take roughly 25 - 30 calls to your landlord to get this accomplished but it is doable. Make sure you put some traps in the walls before you seal them off or you will hear the mice using the space between your walls as a passage between the apartments adjacent to yours. It truly is an urban jungle, so be prepared!
