The crib should have no missing or broken hardware and slats. Slats must be no more 2 3/8 inches apart -but I'd be surprised if you found a brand new crib that didn't meet the standard. Corner posts should not be higher than 1/16''. The reason for this is so clothing does not catch on them.
As of this past June 2011, cribs with drop-sides are no longer considered safe. Most parents hadn't been using them in recent years regardless, but now it's a definite do not buy. Drop-sides were once considered convenient, but too many faulty sides led to a serious safety concern. In terms of mattresses, there should be no space between the crib and the mattress. If you can fit two fingers in between, the mattress is too small for the crib. It should be a nice snug fit. And while we're on the subject, never ever purchase a soft mattress for your baby. It should always be firm. This is in case your baby rolls onto his stomach. On a soft mattress, the baby's face could sink in and he could suffocate. It should be very firm and quickly bounce back when you press on it.
Although for some money may be very tight, it's not a wise decision to purchase used or old cribs. Depending on when the crib was first purchased, it might not meet all the new safety requirements. The price may be a steal, but you can't afford to risk your baby's safety on cheaper baby furniture. Even the cheapest models offered today will still meet all requirements so you don't have to fret. Also avoid any decorative designs that could break off and cause a choking hazard. Likewise, cutout designs may trap your baby's arm or leg.
When it comes to baby cribs, sometimes simple is better. The most important feature to look for in a crib is its durability. Your baby deserves the best so choose top quality brands that offer sturdy baby cribs to keep your baby safe and sound.
