Picking The Appropriate Lighting For Your Home

Lighting is a key element to any room. It should enhance the features of the room and mesh with the furniture and other décor. It can be used to highlight items, emphasize the tone or theme, or flush color. Lighting is ultimately an ambient enhancer.

Chandeliers are trendy right now. They can be used expressively in many rooms. They were a staple in the more romantic and exuberant decorative eras and they are making a comeback with a contemporary twist.

Two focal points in the home include the kitchen and dining areas. They should represent elegance and comfort incarnate. Dining rooms must be inviting to family and guests. The lighting should be bright but gentle. It should also stress the table, since the meal is the common thing that draws the family together. Hang a crystal chandelier or two over the dining room table. If your table and chairs are traditional, you may want a brass or bronze chandelier.

In the kitchen, antique and French-inspired crystal chandeliers are encouraged. They look lovely in country home kitchens with extensive woodwork and tiling. The light from crystal reflects nicely off of glass or porcelain back splashes.

Antique crystal chandeliers can be applied to contemporary kitchens too. It is not taboo to take traditional elements and combine them with modern appliances and cabinets. The way to create continuity is through the use of colors, metals, or detailing; the similarities between contrasting elements are what make the combination striking and interesting. The crystal chandelier is obviously the major light source, but it can be supported with modern lighting fixtures in the ceiling.

Bathrooms can feature a mini crystal chandelier and a series of wall sconces. If you want a daring look, hang the chandelier over the tub. The sconces look elegant as light for the vanity mirror. Do not overkill with lighting, since the bathrooms generally reflect well and are not massive spaces.

For the living room, think simple lighting. Lamps are often a big light source, as well as big windows. However, if you do want to include a chandelier look for one that is not overpowering in its design. The living room is a space to relax, not a place for showmanship.

Out of all the rooms in the home, the bedroom is the one that mood lighting is essential. It is our private space. It is where we wake up, sleep, and unwind. It is also the romantic spot in the home. Lighting in the bedroom must be flexible. From small lamps for end tables to crystal chandeliers above a canopy bed, there must be cohesiveness and comfort.

Remember, the lighting changes the impressions of the room. Be very selective when you purchase lighting fixtures and be sure to refer to pictures for inspiration.
