The only thing I love more than a nice hotel is a fine restaurant. I enter both the same way, taking off my hat and coat, pleased by the soft lighting and abundance of leather on menu covers or on leather 3 ring binders. I seat myself, on a bed in the one, or a cushioned chair in the other, and relax, looking around, taking it all in. There fine details such as leather coasters, and fine bindery has information that is important to me in deciding what I am going to do immediately. I will either order a filet mignon with a side of spinach and mashed potatoes, or I will determine which sights are worth seeing first and foremost.
I take off my shoes and stretch out my feet, for I have come a far distance to be here. Sometimes I am alone, sometimes there are others beside me and we joke and laugh and make excited small talk about what is coming our way. It's no surprise that fine hotels and fine restaurants impart such a similar feeling to the weary hungry traveler, for they both satisfy elemental urges; that is, to sleep and to eat. After that there is another urge but it is not nearly as appropriate to discuss here and now.
But what separates the well-satisfying of these urges from the base-satisfying of them is in the details. Egyptian cotton, leather placemats, soft lighting, refined music; you see, it is important to a man of taste to have the choice between eating a cheeseburger and a piece of filet, and moreover it is only so when he is a man of freedom, a quality usually dependent on money and power. So that power comes to mean ability to move freely and go where one will without feeling out of place.
And surely the powerful man has more ease in going somewhere inexpensive and not feeling out of place, than the poor man does in going to a very expensive hotel or restaurant and feeling out of place; for in the latter scenario the cause is his lack and therefore inability to enjoy the finer pleasures. Not that the poorer man is of any lesser quality; indeed it is true he may have more grit, however the richer man, more at ease in any station of life, unless he has been spoiled, and is unable to move down as easily as he has moved up, is no less devoid of character and comes to have more experience.
