Take care of your feet was advice my grandfather made sure to impart on my brothers and I. It was wisdom that had been imparted to him by his own brother who was on the front lines in World War II. Military men are trained to maintain their feet, they keep loads of fresh dry socks in order to ensure that they can move quickly and efficiently. My grandfather never had to go to war but he took care of his feet all the same. As a result he managed to work until the day he passed away, just like he had since he was a young man. He wanted it that way. These days we don't even have it that bad. The advances in orthopedic shoes and the development of specific diabetic shoes has made having healthy feet easier and easier. Even after damage has been done there are ways to reach a level of comfort that would have been unfathomable in my Grandfather's day. I know I appreciate the advances in foot care. In the past people who's feet just happened to be widely set simply had to suffer through over sized or under sized shoes in one way or another. Now thanks to the rest of the world catching up to the "take care of your feet" mentality there are wide width shoes specifically for folks in my predicament. What's more, if there is a more specific abnormality facing your feet there are a number of places prepared to make custom shoes just for your feet. It is as if the entire planet came around on the importance of foot care over the last fifty years or so. Finding the best walking shoes is not something we think about when we are younger. In fact many people never think about taking care of their feet until it is way too late. Luckily even those people will have the opportunity to take better care of their feet and preserve the ability to walk around at will with the help of orthopedic shoes. When I think about how he and his brothers might have seen the new emphasis on taking care of their feet, I assume they would have been happy. Taking care of their feet in some cases saved lives and certainly saved them a lot of trouble later in life. With the right footwear and the good sense to treat my feet to be on my feet and moving for years to come.
