What To Do When You Have An Electrical Short In Your Home

A good way to discover that you have an electrical short in your home is when you have a lot of tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses. It's also common to hear a popping sound, which may be fairly loud, whenever the circuit becomes activated. An electrical short occurs when there's an accidental electrical path developed in a circuit which leads to an erroneous connection. If you feel there is an electrical short anywhere in your house, you must locate it and have it repaired immediately. If it is not attended to, an electrical short may cause wire damage as a result of insulation melting, circuit damage, or even a fire. If you're comfortable working around electricity, you can use these steps to find and repair the electrical short yourself. Otherwise, calling a licensed electrician is the best option.

Initial Examination

Checking your appliances is usually the initial step when trying to locate an electrical short. When you know which appliances you were using when the short occurred, unplug these appliances. Next you should reset the breaker or change the fuse that is linked to the circuit that has supplied electricity to those appliances. Energize the circuit, making sure that the fuse does not blow and the circuit breaker will not trip. If something happens here, even if there are not any appliances plugged in, then it is likely that this short is within the wiring or in the receptacle. If there seems to be no problem, then it is probable that one of the appliances is causing the problem. Test each appliance separately. If you discover one of your appliances that triggers the circuit breaker to trip or the fuse to blow, you will want to replace or fix the appliance.

Dealing With Shorts In Wiring

If you fail to find the appliance that is the reason for the short, then there's the chance that you've got some kind of wiring problem. The first step should always be to turn off the problematic circuit. Make sure to check the voltage using a volt/ohm meter to make sure that the circuit is switched off before proceeding. When the voltage shows as zero on the meter, you will take out the receptacle, using pliers plus a screwdriver to get the wires out. Adjust the volt/ohm meter so that it is set to measure ohms. Connect one of the leads to the uncovered end of your black wire, and also the other lead to the bare ends of the white wire. When the meter indicates O.L. (infinite ohms), this is a sign that the receptacle itself needs to be replaced. If the volt/ohm meter is indicating continuity, the short is likely in the wire or the circuit breaker. If you see continuity, you will want to turn off the main breaker so as to investigate further. At this point, calling an electrical contractor is usually your best option in the interest of safety. An electrician will be able to identify the problematic fuse or breaker connection and remove the wires. When the wire is shorted or maybe the breaker is defective, an electrical contractor will be able to safely make your repair and then test to make certain the issue is completely resolved.

So, if you have any problems with an electrical short in your home, make sure you call your licensed electrician. He can locate the problem and aid you in getting it fixed correctly.
