Many couples try to become pregnant but it can be hard as you need to time a woman's ovulation just right. Sperm only live for a few days, and there is a small gap of opportunity for that sperm to hit the egg while ovulating. There are some couples though that have a rough time and something prevents them from being successful. That is called infertile and can leave many couples depressed and looking for a way to get pregnant. Infertility is not just one partner's fault. A man can be just as infertile as a woman. It can be in one partner or it can be in both partners. • A man can have a low sperm count and this happens in about 1/3 of cases • There are 1/3 chances that infertility is on part of both partners • There is another 1/3 chance that infertility happens in women Causes of Infertility in Men There are a variety of things that affect a man's fertility. These factors affect his sperm and how it moves or how it fertilizes an egg. Some of the more common factors include: • Abnormal sperm production that can happen from a few things including testicles that are undescended as well as a number of infections • Issues with sperm delivery that can come from sexual issues including pain during sex, premature ejaculation, and also blockage in one of the testicles • There are general issues with health that can affect sperm health such as smoking, being overweight, and taking drugs • Certain damage that is due from cancer including radiation as well as chemotherapy • Any man that is over 40 may find they have a harder time with the health of their sperm Infertility in Women There are also a few things that can affect a woman's egg health and can include things such as: • Damage or even blockage to a woman's fallopian tubes which can come as a result of inflammation or a STD such as Chlamydia • Issues with ovulation which in turn can come from tumors or exercising too much • Going through menopause early can also deplete a woman's follicles. There are a few different signs that you are going through early menopause and include problems with your immune system such as smoking or going through radiation. Additional Causes • There are some medications that can affect a woman's fertility • If you have certain medical conditions such as Cushing's disease, kidney disease, sickle cell disease or amenorrhea you will find fertility is affected as well • There are certain forms of cancer that affect a woman's fertility and things such as radiation or chemo have a large impact on it • If you have certain issues with your thyroid gland, having too little or too much of the hormone it is going to have an effect on your menstrual cycle each month Infertility can be difficult for several couples but this doesn't mean its impossible to have a child. Talk to your fertility specialist to learn more about the new medical advances that can help you.
