What makes a luxury watch? Is it the way it sparkles and blends with an expensive suit? Is it the fact that it has a name like Patek Philippe or Panerai on it? Is it Ryan Gosling or Eli Manning or the lead singer of Maroon 5 wearing it on the cover of the latest issue of GQ magazine? Honestly, all of those things are likely true of any luxury watch worth its salt but what truly makes these watches luxurious is their expert engineering and indelible reputation among the sorts of folks who quantify the value of watches. That they appear on the cover of a magazine is really just gravy. That they have a high end brand name is simply confirmation of the expert engineering and design. And that they sparkle and blend with an expensive suit is simply coincidental. These designer watches would sparkle if you were wearing sweat pants.
A lot of watches try and pretend to be high end but those that are truly designer watches mostly come from companies that have been producing great timepieces since the 1800's. The 1800's were sort of the boom years for the Swiss watch business and while they have ebbed and flowed throughout their time, Switzerland remains the epicenter of luxury watch production and design. It is the exact thing that they are referencing when you hear a phrase like "Swiss precision." That same precision is still found in Hublot watches and A Lange Sohne watches, and many other producers of fine watches still working out of Switzerland.
When I decided a few years ago that I wanted a designer watch, I did not just run out and buy the first one that fell in my lap. I also did not request a luxury watch for my birthday or the holidays. I decided that if I was going to get a watch of this kind of quality and value I would do so myself, and only when the exact right one fell into my lap. I did not force things I wanted to understand as soon as I found the watch of my dreams. I developed a zen approach to finding my designer watch. It worked within months I had been exposed to a wealth of options and all seemed incredibly luxurious to me. There were watches I had seen at award shows and on trading floors. Watches worn by doctors and lawyers. When the watch that finally tickled my fancy came into my life, I was thrilled. I still am. It is a beautiful Audemars Piguet watch and I am wearing it right now.
