Dating is hard. It's really hit or miss; you see an attractive someone on a subway platform only to hope that she gets in the same car with you and that fate will provide a meeting. But she doesn't. Or worse, she does, and as you try to keep it cool and get her to notice you and smile, she shows you a snaggletooth. You think how can a woman so pretty have such bad teeth? Why didn't she ever go to a Medicaid orthodontist? It's not like her family's finances are an excuse when Medicaid braces are an option…And you hold your tongue.
You go onwards with your life and the months pass. Your friend tells you she has a friend for you. Oh? What does she look like? She's fun? If only you were blind. But at this point you figure why not. She can't be that bad if she's friends with your friend. And so at the restaurant you wait for her and she shows up and isn't bad looking but the way she eats her cheeseburger - raw, first of all, and then biting into it with juice dribbling down her chin - is gross. She had no idea she had a piece of lettuce stuck in her teeth. She probably got into a cab and the cabbie laughed at her when she got out, handing him the lettuce that she should have used to pay for braces that would have prevented that vegetable from getting stuck.
My friends call me picky. I tell them to hear me out, I'm looking for a wife. I'm thirty-four years old here, no spring chicken. I don't mind dating casually, but I'll get bored immediately if she doesn't have a good sense of humor and straight white teeth. The teeth, I know, always back to the teeth. But come on, in this day and age we should be able to find people with straight teeth, who went to a Medicaid orthodontist when they were little if they had crooked teeth or who were well bred enough to have been born with a gorgeous smile. Preferably the former, because that at least shows a woman who came into her beauty and wasn't spoiled by it from an early age.
In the meanwhile I'll continue my search, always on the lookout for the perfect smile. I'll let you know if I find anything.
