My home was plagued with pests. I used to bemoan my feeble state, comparing myself to an Egyptian beset with three (modern) plagues: mice, flies, and mosquitoes.
The mice were bad. They'd run around our kitchen counter, leaving their droppings for us to clean, scurrying under our microwave and back into their holes. The exterminator came with the best mouse traps, he said. He also advised to keep the kitchen immaculate; that way the mice will have nothing to eat, and will turn elsewhere for sustenance. So far so good. The holes in our bread have disappeared, but we still have to be wary of leaving treats out on the countertop. Usually we hide them in the microwave.
The flies were bad news too. There is nothing as unappetizing as watching flies couple while trying to eat a delicious meal. Even worse is when one lands on your meal, which I rarely, if ever, let happen. We hung disposable fly traps over our sink, where they liked to sit, rubbing their little hands together as they drank from the faucet….We try to keep windows closed and generally the flies stay out of our way. I keep a flyswatter handy, just in case.
The mosquitoes might be the worst. I'll be in bed, reading, and I'll see the dizzying hover of a small insect and clap my hands at it. More often than not, I miss, and become enraged at being unable to find something that was so evidently easy to kill just moments ago. After looking for traces of it, I'll give up and go to sleep, only to hear a buzzing sound millimeters away from my ears as I hug the line between comatose and conscious. In a paroxysm of rage, I turn on the light, look around, and still can't find it. The next day I wake up with red welts on my neck and face. Although they aren't as bad as the ones on your feet and legs, they're still ugly. I'm not about to sleep with my head under the sheets. We've been trying to eliminate their breeding grounds (standing water) by keeping our backyard clean. Sometimes I even spray myself with DEET, the chemical found in anti-mosquito sprays, before bed. This helps.
When it comes down to it, it's important to be wary about cleanliness in and around your home. That way these pests never have the chance to enter and get away with annoying you.
