It was so muggy this morning, you should have checked the weather to make sure. Now it's a slight drizzle but who knows about half an hour from now. Pretty soon the puddles outside look like they're getting shot with BBs. You need a plastic bag, first and foremost, when it comes to rainy day bike accessories, to cover your seat so you aren't sitting on wet for however long your ride is. You'll get pneumonia! After that it sure helps to have fenders, otherwise your shoes and your lower back will get soaked from the muddy splatter. If it's warm enough you may as well bike shirtless, and you can even take off your socks if you're wearing comfortable shoes.
As you ride, pay close attention to the ground. The rain moves garbage, such as glass and sharp plastic, into different areas. People are more reckless when it comes to disposing their trash, figuring the rain will wash it away, and so they throw their bottles out their car windows for innocents like us to bike through and find ourselves with a flat tire, that sinking feeling of disappointment and anger, and immediate worry about what to do next.
Godness forbid you have to flip over the bike and change the tire and walk to a gas station where you can fill up the new tube, the whole time the tire making that wet sad sound as it goes round and round. Then you'd really be drenched. Hopefully the bicycle gods don't spurn you any more than they already have. Let them allow you to get home soaked; that's enough punishment for the day.
Biking in the rain isn't as pleasurable as biking on a perfectly warm day, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun. Put on your rain face and get excited about your all-weather dedication. Be careful when going around turns, slow it down, and pay extra attention to cars, who may not be looking out for your bicycle taillights. The rain is slippery and makes everything more dangerous.
When you get home, take a rag and wipe your bike down. Rust can grow in your spokes and all the flotsam and jetsam from the streets kicks up into your gears and your derailleur and the underside of your bike. Add a little chain lubricant and you're pretty much ready to ride tomorrow. Unless it's raining again. Then you may want to get to work another way.
