Dad's New Healthcare Furniture

"Turn it sideways, little bit more, little bit more, there. There. Okay now tilt it. Careful. Steady. Hold on a second. Don't hit the wall. Don't! Careful you're really close." This went on for most of the Saturday afternoon we helped the old man move into his new office. My father is a neurosurgeon, and why he didn't just hire movers to take the healthcare furniture into his office, I don't know. Maybe he wanted to give us the exercise, maybe he just wanted a bonding experience with his boys. Afterwards we did get a nice Italian dinner, so I guess you could say it was worth it.

Originally, he wanted to buy office furniture at a local store and have it delivered, but he wound up buying office seating online. To be fair, we only had to move his desk; the movers were coming with the rest of the reception desk furniture that Thursday and then the following Monday he'd be all moved in.

As a result his old office furniture, the stuff I had played and hidden behind when I was just a lad, was going to our home. I was getting his old desk and chair, and my little brother was getting the round conference table.

A couple of weeks later, when we came to see him after school, all the healthcare furniture was set up. There was floor to ceiling office storage and I had to say, the office looked pretty nice. If I were one of his patients, my fear about him operating on my neck would be distanced by the broad leaves of the potted ficus and the smooth mahogany of his office seating. While we waited for him to finish with his patients, we sat in the quite comfortable chairs and flirted with the cute receptionist, Kristen, sitting behind the matching reception desk furniture. After we ran out of things to talk about and she had to answer the phone, we returned to the chairs to read Time Magazine and Sports Illustrated.

When he emerged in his lab coat, with that goofy smile on his face, we told him the place looked great. He said he couldn't have done it without us. So it turned out that that Saturday afternoon was a fair trade to make the old man happy (and to get his old desk and a delicious plate of spaghetti Bolognese).
