Know Your Options: Synthetic Versus Real Hair Wigs

Whether you are interested in wearing a wig to liven up your accessory collection or contend with illness induced hair loss, choosing the right wig is a very personal decision. By being informed and knowing your wig options, you can select the wig that best suits you and your lifestyle.

Synthetic wigs no longer resemble coarse Barbie doll hair. Advances in fiber construction and texture have made them appear practically identical to real hair wigs and they cost much less money. Synthetic wigs are easy to maintain; when my aunt had cancer, she preferred having a synthetic wig. She said it was easy wash and wear; she'd throw it in the washing machine, let it dry, and be on her way. Although, throwing a synthetic wig in the washing machine is NOT a recommended way of cleaning it, the wig held up nicely and looked real. It looked so good in fact that at her grandson's christening her brother commented on the style and told her he had never seen her hair look better! While it was certainly a faux pas on his part, she handled it with grace and it definitely illustrated that her fake hair looked very real!

Real hair wigs can be styled like actual hair, which means that unlike synthetic wigs, they can withstand heat and hot styling tools. They can be washed using shampoo and conditioner, and their texture is obviously identical to that of actual hair. Although real hair wigs may be a bit expensive, they tend to have a better value than synthetic wigs. They also can last for 5-10 years if properly cared for. Real hair wigs may last longer if they are not worn daily and are professionally cleaned every six months by a hairdresser who specializes in wigs.

Different conditions and, in certain cases, medical treatments, may cause hair loss. Alopecia areata, for example, is classified as an autoimmune disease, although its origin is unknown. Certain scientists believed that individuals may be genetically predisposed to the disorder and that an environmental factor may act as a trigger. The chemo therapy used to combat cancer causes hair loss. If you or someone you know is preparing to undergo treatment, shopping for a wig before it starts will allow time to choose the best wig before the body's energy's resources are taxed by the chemo.

When selecting a synthetic or real hair wig, make sure that the hair color and cut match your skin tone and bone structure. Quality wigs, made from both real and synthetic hair are available in every style and shade imaginable. Regardless of your reason for choosing to wear a wig, you will be able to find that makes you feel polished and confident.
