ESCOs Should Consider Energy Education

By : Mark Etinger

Energy companies should consider building youth programs to encourage young adults to learn energy efficiency. As with any tutelage or grant, these programs act as gateways for future jobs within an energy service company. In the long run these programs are beneficial to both parties.

In an increasingly tech savvy world the demands rise, but not all of the resources will. On top of needing running water, heat, and lighting, we also use electricity for computers and other equipment. We store important data, educate, and run complicated medical equipment using computer technology. We even receive and send information via the internet to broadcast. It's a collective obligation of the current and future generations to ensure that these needs will always be accessible.

Each generation will face a different problem when it comes to energy consumption and it takes out-of-the-box thinking to provide new energy solutions. The world population is not decreasing anytime soon and there needs to be an efficient way to handle provisions. Energy supply companies that are on the cutting edge of research and technology have an opportunity to engage with the next generation and work with them to build a more environmentally aware and energy efficient future. After all, several of these students may one day end up running these energy companies so it's best they learn young. Future energy specialists, technicians, researchers, and plant workers alike will be responsible for handling both the needs of the company and the public.

It's also a great way to provide for job opportunities within the ESCOs in economic downturn. It becomes a brain-trust that can expand on current jobs within energy companies as well as create new jobs dedicated to researching, testing, and funding new energy solutions. If these programs connect directly with schools, they can act as a doorway for students interested in energy solutions and efficiency to get internships. These experiences could lead them and many others after them into the business.

It may seem like a simple idea but it makes a difference. The first step to building a safe and cost effective future is to broaden the scope of energy education and job opportunities. Sustainable energy is on the brink of a breakthrough and making them widely available still presents itself as a challenge. Through synergy and positive feedback there can be a world of difference between what is possible now and what will be possible in due time.
