What You Need for a Road Trip: From a Vehicle Backup Camera to Sleeping Bags

If you're planning a Great American Road Trip, you need to be prepared. You should know what route you're taking, and have a general idea of what sites you want to visit. You should also think about the best way to do it. How many people are going? Is your car big enough? Renting an RV is a popular option when it comes to seeing this grand continent. Don't be intimidated by size; most of these large vehicles come with a vehicle backup camera or an RV backup camera system. It may take some getting used to, but I'm sure it's nothing you can't handle.

Make a list of the cities you want to visit but remember that you probably don't want to spend too much time with lots of other people. Not even your RV backup camera system will be able to help you find a parking spot in big cities like Dallas, Denver, Chicago, or Atlanta. But you can easily stay on the outskirts of a town and take public transportation into the city center for the day. Staying farther away from the downtown is cheaper too, which brings me to another aspect of road tripping: camping. If you do choose an RV, make sure there's room enough for everyone, or at least bring sleeping bags. If you have a car, think about camping under the stars. Campgrounds typically include all the amenities you'd find in a hotel at a much lower cost.

Then check to see which national parks and monuments are on your route. There is so much natural beauty in the West that it can be daunting—you won't see everything--- but knowing what's top priority will help you when you're on the road. It's also important to be able to make last minute pit stops and route changes. Who knows, maybe instead of El Paso, you want to see Carlsbad Caverns? You don't have time for both, but it's easy to make the switch if you're willing. Feel free to take advantage of state routes and back roads, which are far more pleasurable to drive than interstates, which should be reserved for when you have serious truckin' to do.

Above all, have fun. Hitting the road is another way of saying having an adventure. You will see so much that it will be hard to remember every detail, so bring a camera. It will be a trip you never forget.
