Kids Home Safety For The Water

Summer is in full swing which means spending time at the pool and beach. Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for young children. The CDC estimates that more than 500 children under the age of five drown in pools, spas, natural bodies of water, or bathtubs each year. With statistics like these, it is all the more important that you know about kids home safety to prevent any accidents from occurring.

The best method of prevention is to never leave children near any bodies of water unsupervised. Toddlers and preschoolers love to explore and if you own a pool it's imperative that you make it impossible for them to get into the pool on their own. Experts, and in cities and states it's a local ordinance or law, recommend or mandate installing a four-sided fence around the pool, as well as a self-closing and self-latching gate. This is just the first layer of protection though, because we all know it's possible that someone might leave the gate open. There should be childproof doors for entrance ways that lead to the pool. Never leave any objects near the pool that can be used to get over the gate. Additionally, consider investing in a power safety cover to place over the pool when not in use. And never, never have any portable electrical appliances in or around the pool!

When it is time to go for a swim, always designate one person as the "pool watcher" whose only responsibility is to watch the children. Every parent should take a course in CPR and child safety programs so adults can always be prepared. When swimming in lakes or other natural bodies of water, let your kids use Coast Guard approved life vests and jackets. Teaching your kids to learn how to swim at a young age, around four or five, can give them the confidence to swim safely, but remember it doesn't assure that an accident won't happen.

Drowning doesn't just occur in pools and oceans. Water safety includes keeping children away from bathtubs and toilet bowls too. Child safety products can be purchased to keep the lid of the toilet closed. Kids have a habit of dropping toys in there and you certainly don't want them trying to fish it out. As for the bathtub, hair and body part entanglement can be a serious danger. Install the newest dual drains and drain covers and have them checked yearly.

By taking the proper safety precautions and keeping a watchful eye on your children, you can keep them safe from danger.
