Drinking is great for socializing. Honestly in some ways having a well stocked bar is a better asset than having a mighty golf swing or a fancy car. People love to get together and toast their business with their best single malt. It is a little bit of a hold over to the "good" old Mad Men days of business. Obviously now people aren't sipping sifters full of single malt scotch at the daily meetings they are having with colleagues but when the computers are put to sleep and the file cabinets are locked they are still gathering around for a couple of glasses scotch whiskey. It is a fantastic tradition in business. Socializing is a key to success in most competitive businesses. It is not that your skill level and work does not speak for it's self it is more of a case of your speaking has to hold it's own in tandem with that other stuff. No one who is hyper successful is so in spite of their inability to communicate. Well maybe Mark Zuckerberg, but mostly no one. In business as in life a little bit of glad handing and schmoozing can go a long way. And what could be a better way to get good at that then by enjoying some post office hours cocktails at your local best whiskey spot. It is a place where the realities of the work place can melt away a few glasses in and you can decide if you really like a coworker or not on their own merits. As talented as some people are their personalities can level them off in the realm of wanting to work with them. We want the people at our companies and on our staffs to reflect our values and have the sort of fun we have. A few shots of single malt scotch whiskey can be a good proving ground on that front. Obviously work is more important than drinking, and drinking is not the best test for everybody. Still there is a certain pleasure in knowing what kind of a guy or gal your coworkers are three sheets to the wind. It is in some ways an equalizer. We are all the same when were drinking the best scotch from the same bottle. No one is better than anyone when the single malt scotch whiskey is the star player on the team. We can all just learn who we really are.
