When it comes to coin collecting, you may seek out particular designs because you like the way they look, or coins of your birth year, or any number of other specific coins for a variety of reasons. But if you are looking to build up a coin collection that's going to be valuable in the many years to come, you'll want to know what the most valuable coins are, in case you come across them. Make sure you never pass these up! 1969-S Lincoln Cent with Doubled Die Obverse: This coin is the rarest U.S coin at the present moment. Valued at around $35,000 dollars, there are a ton of counterfeits but they are easy to spot because they have the wrong mint mark. The coin was actually confiscated at first by the Secret Service until the U.S. Mint came out and said they were genuine. Finding one of these is like finding a year's worth of pay for many people. Look for doubling on the "heads" side of the coin on everything but the mint mark. Then you've struck gold. 1970-S Small Date Lincoln Cent with Doubled Die Obverse: Worth around $3,000, you can tell if you've found the right one by looking at the double die over the "LIB" in Liberty and over "In God We Trust". 1972 Lincoln Cent With a Doubled Die Obverse: There is no mint mark but it is very easy to spot the doubling. If you have trouble, you can use a die marker to figure out the kind of die and avoid the wrong coin or counterfeits. 2004-D Wisconsin State Quarter with Extra Leaf: While the long term value of the coin has been debated, right now this coin goes for $200-$300 and is definitely a coin that you can find, but would want to sell quickly. The defect in the die makes it look like there is an extra leaf, which is very apparent. 1999 Wide "AM" Reverse Lincoln Cent: This variety actually has 3 different dates that are worth money, 1998, 1999, and 2000, but the 1999 version is the rarest. The AM in America is separated from the rest of the word. In the normal version, the AM is either close or touching. In circulated condition, these coins run for about $5 to $25, in MS-63 or better they go for $75 to even $600 depending on the color of the coin.
