How to Choose an Orthodontist

It might seem that the best way to choose an orthodontist is to get a referral from your general dentist. While it's always good to take his recommendation, you still want to ultimately make the decision yourself and choose an orthodontist with whom you feel comfortable. Besides relying on your dentist, ask friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors for any recommendations. Before setting up any type of consultation, make sure he or she is a licensed member of the American Association of Orthodontics. Members have completed two to three years of full-time postgraduate classes and they are appraised of and familiar with the latest research and technological advances.

When you go for your consultation, don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions. You're essentially interviewing him to see if he's qualified for the job. Ask about level of experience and how long he has been practicing orthodontics. Ask to see before and after photos of previous patients. You need to know he will give you the results you want. Inquire about the different treatment options offered. Everyone does traditional wire braces, but does this orthodontist also use mini implants, invisible braces like Invisalign, or clear brackets and bands?

Take a look around the office to get a feel for the ambiance. Does it seem chaotic with little kids running around or is it peaceful and friendly? Does the staff make you feel at home? Most orthodontic procedures can last up to two years, with appointments made every six to eight weeks. That's a lot of time spent sitting in that chair and you don't want it to ever be an unpleasant experience. I know I felt closer to my orthodontist that any of my other doctors because I was there so incredibly often. Having a good rapport with the staff truly makes a difference.

Next to office atmosphere, financing options is the most important element to consider. Braces themselves can be very expensive. And, depending on your dental problems, you may require additional procedures. A palate expander, for example, may be required before you can even talk about braces. Dental insurance will only cover so much and the rest must be paid out of pocket. Talk about what payment plans are available and if you are able to receive a dental loan.

Lastly, is the office close to your office, home, or child's school? As previously mentioned, trips are frequent and you may not want the added gas mileage on your car. But then again, you might be willing to go far for excellent dental care.
