When you receive a beautiful gift like an A Lange and Sohne watch you really want to be as appreciative as possible. It is quite simply not every day that a person receives such a thoughtful and beautiful gift. Of course if you know nothing about high quality watches and can not tell the difference between a Panerai watch and a Timex you might just end up under selling how exciting such a gift is. I ran into this problem several years ago. Knowing nothing of the value of A Lange watches(I know, what a rube?!) I gushed over a shirt I received and paid the watch a simple: "Wow this is a gorgeous watch!" Followed embarrassingly quickly by a "And this shirt! It's Hilarious! 'Do the voices in my head bother you?!' So clever!" When the dust settled on this apparently very fruitful birthday I wore the watch every day, never quite realizing the gravity of the thing dangling from my wrist while I walked proudly around in novelty t-shirts. Then one day I bump into a guy who, I know now, was wearing a Patek Philippe watch. He stopped me and complimented my watch and I said "Thanks, it was a birthday gift." He seemed shocked and said "You must be some friend." I supposed I was and walked off though he had put the thought in my head that this might be a better watch then I had imagined. When I went on the internet and started researching my jaw hit the floor. I had absolutely no idea of the value of an A Lange and Sohne watch. These things are extravagant designer watches. Obviously at that point I put in a phone call to the friend who had made the generous purchase. I gushed belatedly but now appropriately about what a fantastic gift it was. I started wearing it a little more sparingly and of course not in any bad neighborhoods. Honestly when I realized the shear depth of the gift I completely reconsidered my understanding of designer culture and watches in general. Since then I have done a lot of research on these sorts of things and I can assure you the next time a friend drops such a beautiful gift in my lap I will be appropriately beaming about it. If there is a next time that is. Considering my reaction the first go round I would say it might be unlikely.
