Getting signed with a major record label is big dream come true for many hard-working musicians. With the internet spinning everything out of control, Youtube sensations, internet memes, and 15-minute famers are bursting onto the scene. But once again, these are 15 minutes of fame, not necessarily the real deal. The music landscape is changing to adapt. New talent will always be scouted, record labels will always depend on the A&R department to do it but the amount of acts seeking attention has exploded and scouting has become a little more complicated. How can you be sure that you're one of the people that ends the meeting with getting a record deal? It's more than just an online response, it's having a consultant with experience to help guide you. It's what they always say about fame and glory, "It's who you know." This is just one of the tricks of the trade. A&R executives trust people already in the business when it comes to suggesting acts. Record labels need to think about many aspects in building a package to sell the public. They need a persona, a brand of sorts. They also get a lot of offers and demos so you need to know exactly how to portray yourself both when you correspond in message form or in person. An A&R consulting service is there for exactly this purpose. Those in the business are the best to turn to for advise on how to get your break in it. These consultants often have worked for music record labels as the heads of A&R or somewhere within the department. They know the typical talent scouting habits of people in such a department and what to look for. And with such an overwhelming flux of artists sending material you really need to have someone with credibility boosting your image. Every record label will have a slightly different taste in music. It isn't pure marketing logic. It has to do with whether or not you fit their needs and what they want to promote. So don't take it too personally. You can have a higher chance of getting their attention if you know what they want. A&R consultants can help with this process as well. They will help guide you to the right record labels. For example, hip hop record labels are going to want genres in that vein. You won't find the same in an indie rock label. Know your audience before you go because it's going to frustrate both you and them if you don't. Good luck with getting your music career started. Keep on track, do your research, and hire a great A&R consultant to help you. You'll get your foot in the door eventually. Have patience and never give up.
