Crystal Chandeliers and the Hotel Lobby

By : Mark Etinger

Walking into a hotel lobby is the equivalent of shaking hands with a new acquaintance. Lobbies can leave lasting impressions and you only get one first impression. Think about the difference between the lobby of a two star hotel and a five star. Besides offering exquisite rooms, a five star hotel has a lobby you never forget -complete with enormous crystal chandeliers and Victorian seating. It's lush and lavish and you might actually consider just hanging out in the lobby more than your room.

But a hotel lobby doesn't have to be lavish and over the top. It simply has to represent the style and décor of the entire hotel. If you walked into a hotel lobby and saw a twenty foot teardrop crystal chandelier, large vases blooming with hyacinth, and chairs that belong in Buckingham Palace, you expect the rooms to reflect this elegant and regal style. Imagine your surprise walking into the room and finding mod furniture and the room painted in nothing but black and white. I know it would certainly throw me off and leave me muddled. I might go as far to say that I would feel a bit uncomfortable staying in the hotel because I wouldn't know what to expect.

If you're building your hotel from the ground up, picking a décor theme is crucial. What do you want this hotel to say to your clientele? Above all, the hotel needs to represent a vacation or a getaway from everyday life. It's a place to stay when you can't enjoy the comfort of your own home. It should be the next best thing. This feeling of security begins in the lobby. From just one glance, a tourist should be able to distinguish if your hotel is modern chic, luxurious, or young and hip. (It should hopefully never exude cheap!)

There are certain items I always expect to see in a hotel lobby (besides the front desk), seating, artwork, vases of flowers, and crystal chandeliers. Not matter what style you're aiming for, chandeliers offer alluring lighting for ample space. I don't want to see table and floor lamps every few feet to keep the lobby well lit. I expect to be wowed by gorgeous crystal illuminating the lobby. The wonderful aspect about crystal chandeliers is that a chandelier can fit any motif. You might associate them with a rich elegance, but there are styles to match any décor you can imagine. No hotel lobby will ever be complete without one. It's premiere lighting for a superior hotel.
