Working for a Nanny Agency

By : Mark Etinger

For a long time when I was younger, I worked on my own as a babysitter. I was young when I first started and so applying to a nanny agency wasn't possible for me at the age of 16. So I put myself out there in my own neighborhood, trying to make some money after school and on weekends. It worked pretty well, especially since I was getting recommendations from one family to another. But as I got older, I wasn't making enough money any more. The older you get, the more things change and the more you need a better income to take care of things like bills and general life stuff.

In college I decided to try and apply to a nanny agency instead of working on my own. When it comes to applying to an agency, it's easier if you have the kind of experience I did. Having reliable references is really important, because they will definitely call and check in with families you've worked with before. You need to make sure you have everything in order such as all the right numbers before you apply. This is also why you should always be in contact with families, even if you've stopped working with them. You want to retain a good relationship so when that nanny agency calls, they don't say "who is this you are talking about?"

Another thing I went out and did was to get CPR and first aid certification. It's great to have anyway, even if you aren't looking for a job in caring for others. But it's especially helpful for applying to such a job, so that nanny agency knows that if they send you to care for a child or two and something should happen, you are well prepared.

The benefits of working for a nanny agency are that they have all the contacts they need to get you out on a job. They also have families coming to them. While as a solo babysitter I had to advertise myself and try to find families who needed me, here I have the agency contact me when there's an opening, which is often. And you can choose what you'd like to do, whether it's just babysitting for a few hours a day or being a live-in nanny. You can even choose an agency that also deals with senior care, to try a different road in your career. It's all very rewarding.

Be well prepared before applying and if you make the move from a free agent to working with a nanny agency, you'll find it can be a smooth process. You'll also have more work, better pay, and being part of an organization is always a plus.
