Whether you own a fancy lounge in a large city or a dive bar in a small college town, it is important to have the right restaurant furniture. The appropriate furniture helps create the right ambience and mood. If used effectively, it may even help spruce up an otherwise shabby looking establishment.
My favorite bar, Scout's Snug Corner, is a small, distinctly odorous (patchouli oil, stale beer, and sweaty human) dive bar in a small upstate New York college town. Admittedly, that is not a particularly enticing endorsement of this establishment; however, it is much beloved by the locals and transplanted university students. The place has character, granted that character may sometimes remind you of a dirty old man, but it has personality, nonetheless.
What this restaurant/bar (it is advertised as both, but unless lemons and limes are considered the food items on the menu, I have never seen them serve a morsel of sustenance), lacks in classiness it makes up for in heart. Part of that charm comes from its style; the owners may not bother to invest in a fresh coat of paint or better lighting, but they have invested in quality commercial bar furniture. The bar chairs are deceptively comfortable. The aluminum chairs that accompany the three indoor tables have curved backs and are surprisingly cozy.
Although Scout's offers a variety of entertainment including pool tables and computerized pornographic matching games, its main attraction is the musical acts it somehow lures through its' bruised and beaten doors. Scout's biggest space is the open dance floor it offers patrons. Performers stand on a somewhat elevated stage, and people cram together hip to hip, or for the vertically challenged, nose to neighbor's armpit. If the band is particularly popular, the nightclub furniture may be stacked together in a corner of the room so customers have more room to dance.
Perhaps the strangest detail about Scout's is that the back door opens up into a well-kempt garden complete with picnic tables and other restaurant outdoor furniture. This backyard, garden, and accompanying alleyway are the bar's own version of Lover's Lane. In the spring, it is best to be very aware of where you look or step, lest you trip over two sweethearts or drunken hookup buddies locked in a passionate embrace. And, an individual enjoying another's company or someone simply trying to snatch a breath of fresh air can still hear the music playing inside.
People go to this bar for the overall experience. Although distinctly unique, Scout's atmosphere is warm, inviting, and always entertaining.
