The advent of digital photography and equipment has made everyone into potential photographers, since anyone now has access to these supplies, which are available for affordable prices. Digital pictures can now be uploaded, viewed, edited and stored with the use of the appropriate software. Additionally, advances in home photo printers have enabled homes to be transformed into amateur photo studios. Sufficient memory space on digital cameras is vital for their functionality. Digital memory flash cards are a more cost-effective investment than traditional film. They are essential for an aspiring photographer because they enable hundreds of pictures to be saved on one camera. This allows an individual to take multiple pictures, thus increasing the likelihood that he will get that "perfect" shot. The quality of pictures printed from home printers continues to improve with advances in photo printers and photo printer paper. Photographs printed from a digital camera are no longer grainy and lined but rather sharp and clear, giving them a better look and a higher production value. Photo paper is available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses and can be judged based on five qualities: caliper, opacity, brightness, weight, and finish. Photo paper is heavier and thicker than other printer paper; this thickness, called caliper, is essential to to accommodate the amount of ink in printed photos. The greater the opacity of the photo paper, the less likely the ink is to bleed through to the other side of the page. Inkjet photo paper, for example, has a high opacity compared to traditional inkjet or laser papers and is thus better suited for printing pictures. The level of brightness of paper can affect the crisp look of an image. Brightness is measured on a scale of 1-100, and photo paper normally ranks in the high 90s. Since not all photo printer paper is labeled according to brightness, people can determine it by comparing different paper. Although the weight of photo paper may have little to no impact on the quality of the image, its sturdy nature makes it appealing for personal or professional projects. Even if the family photographer is only looking to hang the picture up in his living room, paper weight can make it feel as though it belongs in a gallery. Photo paper has either a gloss or matte finish. The gloss finish creates the same look and sensation as traditional photographic prints. Glossy prints traditionally took a long time to dry, but papers with fast drying gloss finishes now exist. Matte photo paper creates softer, less shiny images. Matte finish photo paper is not the same as inkjet photo paper; it is thicker and specifically designed for photographs. Today, amateur photographers can produce their own pictures from start to finish. Digital photography equipment, such as memory cards and photo printer paper, makes the art of photography accessible to everyone and allows them to produce their own work at home.
